Orchestral
CD and Other Review

Review: Debussy: Fantaisie for Piano and Orchestra; Ravel: Piano Concerto in G; Concerto for the Left Hand; Massenet: Piano works (Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, BBC Symphony

Bavouzet plays all the music exquisitely. Never lacking power, his pianism is also elegant and feather light.

Review: Santo (Juan Diego Florez; Orchestra e coro del Teatro Communale di Bologna/Mariotti)

It’s good to hear the tenor cast his net so wide; and yet, it has to be said, it’s still on home territory that he sounds his best.

Review: Brahms: Symphony No 4, Beethoven: Coriolan Overture (Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique; The Monteverdi Choir/Gardiner)

At first glance, Gabrieli and Schütz, glorious as they are, seem to be at odds with the symphony.

Review: Habanera (Elina Garanca, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai/Chichon)

Eminently listenable, and with moments of loveliness, but also a certain superficiality.

Review: Goetz, Wieniawski: Piano Concertos (Hamish Milne)

The performances by soloist and orchestra are first-rate but nothing can make these works very original.

Review: For Eternity (Celine Byrne, RTE National Symphony Orchestra)

Byrbe's approach seems to focus more on dazzling climaxes than characterisation.

Review: Bartók, Ligeti, Kurtag: Quartets (Cuarteto Casals)

The works sound impulsive and fresh in the hands of Cuarteto Casals.

A young Russian virtuoso, Anna Vinnitskaya, takes a considered and personal approach to the work.

Review: SHOSTAKOVICH 24 Preludes and Fugues (piano: Roger Woodward)

In 1975 few music lovers knew this work. It was the young firebrand Roger Woodward who made the first complete recording in the West.

Review: Josef Suk: Ripening, Symphony No 1 (BBC Symphony / Belohlavek)

The BBC Symphony seems to have assimilated a genuinely Czech sound into their playing.

Review: Des Knaben Wunderhorn (Mahler; Magdalena Kožená, Christian Gerhaher; Cleveland Orchestra/Boulez)

The sound is so stunning it’s hard to believe these are live performances.
