Canberra International Music Festival: MOSSO: music in motion

2 May @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm AEST

Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti’s 2026 program is deeply rooted in place, from site-specific bell works at Parliament House and the National Carillon to chamber and choral premieres.

Anna-Louise Cole sings Wagner Lieder and Strauss’s Four Last Songs, the Australian String Quartet surveys British music from Purcell to Britten and Rebecca Clarke, and Switzerland’s Ensemble Contrechamps delivers a meditative performance of Jürg Frey’s Récit des sensations fragiles at Snow Concert Hall. Luminescence Chamber Singers unveils a program built around a bespoke vocal-processing system, while The Rite of Spring closes the festival in Stravinsky’s own arrangement for two pianos and percussion

Held over a single day at the National Film and Sound Archive, MOSSO: music in motion explores the relationship between music, the moving image and spatial sound.

This fest within the fest offers a day of creative exploration with multiple events (free and ticketed) held at NFSA across the day.

The day kicks off with artist-in-residence Aaron Wyatt’s work Digital Echoeswhich is an exploration of spatial sound and technology featuring both Aaron on viola and artistic director Eugene Ughetti on percussion.

Digital Echoes explores landscape and journeys, both physical and abstract. As a percussionist slowly circles the room throughout the duration of the piece, the sound of the viola makes its own voyage across the internet, bouncing back from remote nodes that use the geography of our telecommunications network to create slightly unpredictable delays. Rather than hearing this returned sound through normal speakers, we instead hear these echoes transformed, projected through transducers that activate the various percussion instruments in the space. This is the quintessential MOSSO experience.
