Woodend Winter Arts Festival: Variations and Remembrance
8 June @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm AEST

Seraphim Trio commissioned nine Australian composers to each write a variation on a Schubert Waltz. For this concert, they have selected four variations: from the lyrical variation from Calvin Bowman, to a mini playful one by Elena Kats-Chernin, a jazzy number by Andrea Keller, and a return of Elena with a fast moto perpetuo variation.
The piano trio in A minor by Tchaikovsky is the monumental main course of the program, written in memory of his close friend, pianist Nicholas Rubinstein. Moving from a deeply lyrical opening movement to an expansive theme and variations that culminate in a powerful funeral march, the trio transforms grief into an intensely dramatic and emotional musical tribute.
