The Australian String Quartet is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with Project Ludwig. The interactive concert experience, created in collaboration with tech company Sandpit, will allow the audience to choose the program by voting for which individual movements from Beethoven’s Opus 18 string quartets they would like the ensemble to play. Francesca Hiew spoke to Limelight about the project.

How did the idea for Project Ludwig come together?
We had been approached by the Perth Festival to perform all of Beethoven’s Opus 18 string quartets and wanted to think of a way to present them to other states in a different way. There has long been a desire by a certain member of the quartet to have a ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ type of concert so this fit the mould!
Has the concept evolved since the initial idea was floated?
It’s been more about working out logistics than anything. The concept has stayed the same from the beginning so it’s been exciting to explore how it will work and to walk through the audience experience together.
