Why did 4MBS introduce its Festival of Classics in 1994?

In the mid-1990s, most arts festivals relied on bringing in interstate or international stars to help draw audiences. We wanted to provide a platform for Queensland’s classical musicians. Queensland has produced so many brilliant performers that we set out to create an entire festival around them, giving them the opportunity to be the stars. As a community radio station, we are always looking at how we can create a community of music lovers that supports local talent, and the 4MBS Festival of Classics does that superbly.

Have you been surprised by its success?

Not surprised, more thankful to the performers and the public for coming on the journey with us. The first 4MBS Festival of Classics had six concerts over one weekend, which all sold out. This year, to celebrate the 30th year of the festival, we’re presenting 30 events in 30 days.

Can you tell us about some of the artists who have performed in the festival?
