How did you feel when you received this commission from Musica Viva Australia?

I was thrilled to be able to write for this competition, which is not only very prestigious, but the standard of technical and musical performances is extremely high, so I knew I could write something challenging. I had heard some live broadcasts of the competition in past years, and the ensembles are really wonderful. It was also a huge privilege to dedicate this piece to Barry Jones, a longtime supporter of Musica Viva and Australian music.

How specific was the brief you were given?

I was told the length [between 10 to 15 minutes] and instrumentation for the piece. In addition to that, I was asked to write something that would showcase the exceptional musical and technical capacities of each of the groups.

How challenging is your piano trio?
