During Melbourne’s 2020 lockdown, recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey collaborated digitally with harpist Marshall McGuire to record an album of Baroque and new, experimental music called Bower. Now, as she tells Patricia Maunder, they are embarking on a Musica Viva tour, using lighting to create a poetic, enhanced concert.

What does a musician who describes herself as an initiator and collaborator do when a pandemic not only closes concert halls, but even closes off homes to visitors? For recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey, Melbourne’s 112-day second lockdown through the winter and spring of 2020 “was the longest period in my life, since I was about eight, that I hadn’t made music with other human beings”.
