After almost five years without a Chief Conductor, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra has appointed Mark Wigglesworth. He will take up the position in January 2025 for an initial three-year term.

Born in the UK, Wigglesworth is a former Principal Guest Conductor of the ASO. He will conduct Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Elgar’s Symphony No. 2 with the orchestra this September, before returning to the podium in May 2025 for his inaugural performances as Chief Conductor.

Wigglesworth is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London. He was Associate Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1991–93. He went on to become Principal Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales from 1996–2000 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1998– 2001.

He has since conducted performances with orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, New York Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw orchestras. In 2017, he won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera, and he was recently appointed Chief Conductor of the UK’s Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
