Two leading arts organisations have parted ways with their Artistic Directors. Both departures were effective immediately after the surprise announcements.

On 31 July, Queensland Ballet posted a statement on its website announcing that Leanne Benjamin was to leave the company, just six months into her contract. Succeeding Li Cunxin, who had served for 11 years at the helm of the company, Benjamin’s return to Queensland in the wake of an international dance career was widely celebrated.

“Despite the best intentions from both parties, the current economic environment has posed challenges, making it difficult to realise Leanne’s vision, and it has been mutually agreed for Leanne to depart Queensland Ballet as Artistic Director on 2 August, 2024,” read the statement.

QB Executive Director Dilshani Weerasinghe said “the company has no option but to work within its financial constraints.”

Benjamin added, “Ultimately, as we have worked together to design a vibrant season for 2025, it has become very clear that my artistic aspirations for our company, including the opportunity to engage diverse choreographic voices, both international and Australian, and venture outside of the traditional theatre environment with immersive opportunities is not immediately possible...
