My dad introduced me to the trumpet when I was nine years old. He had played in the cadets during his time at Narrabeen Boys High in northern Sydney. I actually started on the cornet, like many current trumpet players, and played that for a few years before moving to the trumpet.

My teacher at the Sydney Conservatorium was Leanne Sullivan, Principal Trumpet with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Pinchgut Opera and the Orchestra of the Antipodes. She played a huge role in shaping my musical future, by not only teaching me the ins and outs of how to play the trumpet and be a musician, but also how to navigate the professional world as a young trumpet player.

Listening to the sounds of Chris Martin, Tom Hooten and Dave Elton has always been a source of inspiration, and receiving lessons from Chris Martin was a big highlight of the New York Philharmonic Global Academy Fellowship Program, as was the opportunity to play in the orchestra’s trumpet section.
