WC Fields famously said, “Never work with animals or children.”

The great comic movie star was a well-known curmudgeon and wit who once commented that he studied the Bible “looking for loopholes”. Despite being on a par with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, he is best known today for advising against appearing with those sacred cows of entertainment, kids and animals.

It’s sound advice, particularly in relation to animals, because unlike wannabe child stars, they have no interest in doing what the script demands.

Causing havoc isn’t confined to stage performers. In 2017, a Broadway performance of Cats was disrupted when a service dog did what many dogs do on spotting a feline. The pooch took off across the stalls and onto the stage in pursuit of Bombalurina, played by Mackenzie Warren. A spokesperson for Andrew Lloyd Webber later said, “We’re pleased to report that no animals or humans were harmed in the dust-up . . .”
