Our September Recording of the Month comes from the Neave Trio. Since forming in New York City in 2010, violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov and pianist Eri Nakamura have impressed again and again through a combination of technical excellence, musical probity and intelligent and involving programming.

The album is called Rooted, and the idea is music that reflects nationality and place. Clive Paget caught up with them to find out how it all came together.

Neave Trio albums are always interestingly programmed. Have you always enjoyed exploring unusual repertoire?

Anna Williams: We are so lucky to exist in a medium that truly enjoys an embarrassment of riches in that there is an enormous amount of incredible repertoire – both from the past and present day – for piano trio. Some are the pieces we all know and love and have sort of grown up with, while others are sometimes hiding in plain sight. It’s an amazing feeling when we are exploring repertoire, find something we hadn’t previously heard of, turn to each other and say, “what IS this?” There’s that initial spark and excitement and then we are off to the races!
