The winners of the 2024 Art Music Awards have been announced at a ceremony hosted on 14 August at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre.

Hosted annually by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre, the award celebrates excellence across Australian art music, including contemporary classical, jazz, improvised, electroacoustic and experimental fields. 

This year, women and gender diverse artists were represented in every Work of the Year and Performance of the Year category.

Sally Whitwell’s score for Margaret and the Grey Mare has won the award for Work of the Year – Dramatic. Written by Katy B Plummer, the work is a video ‘meta-opera’ that sharply critiques the racism and misogyny inherent in the operatic canon. Its libretto was generated with a machine-language tool. This is Whitwell’s first nomination and win at the Awards.
