Nominations for the 76th annual Tony Awards have been announced in New York overnight.

This year’s ceremony will be held in the city’s historic United Palace theatre on 11 June. Oscar winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) returns to host the event for a second year.

Among the front runners for multiple awards are Some Like It Hot, the musical adaptation of the classic Billy Wilder film (13 nominations), the pop-Shakespeare musical & Juliet (nine nominations; read Limelight‘s review of the Australian production here) and New York, New York (nine nominations).

The Jessica Chastain-led revival of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and British playwright Tom Stoppard’s Leopoldstadt were the most-nominated plays, with six nods apiece.

Australian playwright Suzie Miller’s Prima Facie did not receive a nod in the Best Play category but its star Jodie Comer is nominated for Best performance by an actress in a leading role in a play (alongside Chastain).

Prima Facie also features in the Best scenic design of a play category (designer Miriam Buether) and Best Lighting Design of a Play (for Natasha Chivers).
