The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has announced the appointment of Mark Wigglesworth as its next Chief Conductor. He takes up the role in January 2025 for an initial three-year term.

The former Principal Guest Conductor of the ASO, Wigglesworth will conduct the orchestra this September (Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Elgar’s Symphony No. 2) before returning to the podium in May 2025 for his inaugural performances as Chief Conductor.
The UK-born and bred Wigglesworth is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Music in London and won the Kondrashin Conducting Competition in Amsterdam in 1989. He was appointed associate conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1991, a post he held until 1993.
Wigglesworth went on to become principal conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales from 1996 until 2000 and principal guest conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2001.
He has since conducted performances with orchestras worldwide, including the Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Royal Concertgebouw orchestras. He was recently appointment Chief Conductor of the UK’s Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
