Suzie Miller, the Melbourne-based lawyer and playwright has been awarded Best New Play at the annual Olivier awards for her one-woman drama Prima Facie.

Actor Jodie Comer was also named as best actress for her performance in the West End production, which is about to transfer to New York’s Golden Theatre.

Miller’s play premiered at Sydney’s Griffin Theatre in 2019 with Sheridan Harbridge in the role of Tessa, a criminal lawyer who finds out for herself how the legal system fails female survivors of sexual assault. Prima Facie has recently completed a Melbourne season with Harbridge, who has played the role more than 150 times.

Prima Facie was voted Best New Play ahead of Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, Peter Morgan’s Patriots, and Ryan Calais Cameron’s For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy.

The Almeida Theatre’s A Streetcar Named Desire was awarded Best Revival at the prestigious event held in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The award for Best Musical Revival went to the Young Vic’s staging of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!.
