Season Preview: Your guide to the arts in 2023

Black Swan State Theatre Company of WA has announced its 2023 season – its first under new Artistic Director Kate Champion. Champion, who was the founding CEO and Artistic Director of dance theatre company Force Majeure from 2002 to 2015, said she built the five-production season by drawing on “stimulating and arresting ways to tell compelling stories, which grip the imagination in ways that excite and provoke”.

Champion first worked with Black Swan in 1998 on the original stage production of Cloudstreet. Based on Tim Winton’s novel, which is set in Perth, the award-winning co-production between Belvoir and Black Swan was directed by Neil Armfield, with Champion closely involved as choreographer. She was appointed as the company’s Artistic Director in April this year, taking over from Clare Watson.
