The return of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop musical Hamilton to Sydney brings with it a cast of experienced hands and newcomers.

Australia’s original Alexander Hamilton, Jason Arrow, will reprise the title role. Callan Purcell returns as Aaron Burr after performing the role in Brisbane and Auckland. They are joined by Akina Edmonds (as Angelica Schuyler), Elandrah Eramiha (Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds) and Brent Hill as King George.

Making their Hamilton debuts are Vidya Makan as Eliza Hamilton, Gerard-Luke Malgas (Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson), Etuate Lutui (Hercules Mulligan and James Madison) and Googoorewon Knox (George Washington).

Knox (grandson of country music star Roger Knox) joins the company after recently appearing in the Sydney Festival production Big Name, No Blankets, Ibijerri Theatre’s rock and roll biography of the Northern Territory’s Warumpi Band. Vidya Makan recently featured in the Australian touring production of SIX and in the Melbourne Theatre Company premiere of Bloom.

Tainga Savage, an ensemble member in the original Australian company and the international tour, steps into a principal role as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton.

The show’s Australian producer, Michael Cassel, said: “We are overjoyed to welcome back so many familiar faces for Sydney but also to welcome some new members to our Australian Hamilton family. We promised we would be back, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the group of people who will tell this incredible story every night. This company is testimony to the incredible and diverse talent we have on our stages in Australia”.

Hamilton had its Australian premiere at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March, 2021 and went on to play in Melbourne, Brisbane and New Zealand. The 2021 Sydney run received a five-star review from Limelight, with editor Jo Litson describing the production as “stunning”.

Hamilton plays at the Sydney Lyric Theatre exclusively from July 30, with tickets on sale through to 31 October. Sydney is the only city the production will play before leaving Australia.
