The December issue of Limelight is available now in newsagents and from our online store. One year has passed since the Voice of the Century collectors’ edition of Limelight presented the most in-depth Dame Joan Sutherland homage to be published in the wake of her death. This month, we revisit the life and legacy of Australia’s great soprano, as told by her widower and greatest collaborator Richard Bonynge.

Maestro Bonynge shares his candid memories of the real Joan: from when their partnership “caught fire” in 1950s London through her performance highs and lows to her final days.

Opera critic Sarah Noble delves into the great recordings, including newly reissued treasures from the Opera Australia vaults, and ponders whether any singer could be hailed “the next Joan Sutherland”.

In honour of the one and only La Stupenda, Limelight will feature selections from its extensive archive of Joan Sutherland images in a series of three photo galleries online, released in weekly instalments. This week’s offerings captures her in costume for her most memorable moments onstage; stay tuned for galleries devoted to Joan behind the scenes at home, and photographed with the opera legends she counted among her friends.

Readers who love a fine soprano voice will enjoy the December issue’s interviews with Sumi Jo ahead of her Sydney Opera House concert, and with Angela Gheorghiu, who has recorded a tribute album dedicated to her idol Maria Callas.
