Tenth Muse Initiative (TMI) has released its annual review breaking down the diversity of Australian orchestral planning in 2024.
The project is spearheaded by Perth-based soprano, producer and TMI founder Hannah Lee Tungate. Her work tracks the representation of composers in terms of gender, nationality and whether they are living or historical.
“In 2024, we’ve seen some notable differences in programming across the Australian orchestras. Interestingly, those that had lower representation of works by women in 2023 – such as QSO, SSO and TSO – have shown an increase in their 2024 seasons,” says Tungate.
“On the other hand, orchestras that appeared to be leading the way in 2023, like MSO, ACO and CSO, have experienced a dip in the number of works by women in their programs.”
