The Australia Council have announced that Julian Day will be the new Composer in Residence at the Peggy Glanville-Hicks house.

After her return to Australia in 1975, Peggy Glanville-Hicks lived in a three-bedroom terrace at 12 Ormond Street in Sydney’s Paddington area. In her will, she bequeathed the house as a residence for composers. Previous residents include Linda Neil, Paul Stanhope, Matthew Hindson, Andrew Ford and Gordon Kerry. The house has been closed for $400,000 worth of renovations for the last two years but the Australia Council has announced that Julian Day will be the first composer to benefit from use of the purpose-built music studio and, some might say crucially, the new kitchen.

A composer and sound artist, Day is leader of the cutting-edge synthesizer ensemble An Infinity Room (A.I.R) and co-director of Super Critical Mass. He also writes for Limelight and hosts New Music Up Late and other programs on ABC Classic FM.

Described as “an epic and intimate formalist”, Julian creates evocative works through simple yet often lateral means, influenced by conceptual art and pop culture.
