The Alexandra Cameron Memorial Fund ensures disadvantaged young musicians have a chance to take part in the MYO.

In memory of founder Dr Alexandra Cameron, who recently passed away at the age of 107, Melbourne Youth Orchestras has created a memorial fund. Established at the request of Dr Cameron’s family, the Alexandra Cameron Memorial Fund directly supports bursaries for young Victorian musicians who would otherwise be unable to participate in MYO programmes.

“Dr Cameron had boundless energy and worked tirelessly to provide inspirational musical and cultural opportunities for young musicians”, said MYO CEO Dorian Jones. “Nothing was impossible – rather, she knew only ‘degrees of impossibility’. She always believed that young people respond to challenge and leadership, and this she gave. Dr Cameron’s commitment endures at MYO, where we continue to share her passion for enriching young lives through the power of music. At the request of Dr Cameron’s family, we are honoured to have established the Alexandra Cameron Memorial Fund.”

With a background as a lecturer in music education at the University of Melbourne, Dr Cameron became Victoria’s first school music inspector, responsible for the development of music education in secondary schools. Along with Victoria’s original team of specialist music educators, she established Melbourne Youth Orchestras, then called the Secondary Schools Concert Committee, to provide ensemble music performance opportunities for school students.

Dr Cameron’s family has requested that donations or gifts be made to the fund.
