The Australian animated film Memoir of a Snail has received a 2025 Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Film.

It marks the second Oscar nomination for writer-director Adam Elliot, who took home the award for Best Animated Short Film in 2004 for Harvie Krumpet.
Memoir for a Snail graced the cover of the October 2024 issue of Limelight and includes a cast including Sarah Snook, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Magda Szubanski and Jackie Weaver.
The films follows the story of twins Grace and Gilbert Pudel. Grace, who hoards ornamental snails, has been separated from Gilbert as he falls under the custody of a homophobic cult upon the death of their father – Gilbert, who is gay, promises to find her again.
The score was composed by Elena Kats-Chernin and features performances by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Jane Sheldon, James Crabb, Helena Rathbone and Kats-Chernin on piano.
Musicals lead in the this year’s Oscar nominations, with Emilia Pérez earning 13 nominations and Wicked, 10.
