More than 1,000 Australians have been recognised this year’s Australia Day 2024 honours list with many prominent music, performing and visuals arts among them.

Composer Richard Mills has been made Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to the performing arts as a multi-award-winning composer, conductor and artistic director of Victorian Opera (he stepped down from the role in 2023), West Australian Opera (1997-2012) and Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. Mills was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1999.

“I have had the great privilege of serving my art in the company of so many wonderful talented and generous colleagues. My life has been blessed by the beauty of the human voice every day and by inspiration and affection and support of so many people,” said Mills. “I am honoured and grateful.”

Film and television producer Margaret Fink, photographer Bill Henson and sculptor and painter Lindy Lee have also been made Officers of the Order of Australia, as has cinematographer David Parer.
