A new cross-cultural music initiative aimed at strengthening Papua New Guinea’s contemporary music sector will launch this June in Goroka, bringing together emerging local talent and leading Australian artists for an intensive creative exchange.
Musik Blok, spearheaded by PNG-born, Australia-based artist Ngaiire, will see eight emerging PNG musicians participate in a 10-day songwriting and production lab alongside mentors including Nai Palm, Paul Mac, Kaiit, Setwun, Cazeaux O.S.L.O. and Airileke.

Based in Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province, the initiative aims to address long-standing gaps in access to music training, production knowledge and industry pathways within PNG, where many artists have historically needed to travel overseas to build careers. By embedding the program locally, Musik Blok seeks to develop sustainable creative infrastructure while maintaining strong connections to culture, place and community.
Alongside studio collaboration, participants will take part in a community-led cultural exchange in Watabung village, engaging with traditional practices spanning music, food and ceremony. The program also aligns with the PNG government’s recent cultural policy focus on preserving heritage while supporting contemporary artistic development.
Musik Blok operates under Australian leadership, with a board that includes Paul Grabowsky and arts leader Paul Mason, and is envisioned as an ongoing annual mentoring platform fostering long-term creative partnerships between PNG and Australian artists.
The project is currently fundraising through the Australian Cultural Fund to deliver its inaugural program and establish a dedicated creative space in Goroka.
Supporters can contribute to the campaign via the Australian Cultural Fund.
