The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra has appointed Ashley Giles as its new Executive Director following a competitive recruitment process.

Giles, who joined the orchestra in 2017 as Orchestral Operations Manager before being promoted to Head of Artistic Planning & Management six months later, succeeds to the leadership role after helping shape the company’s artistic and operational direction for almost a decade.

In his previous role, Giles oversaw the Brandenburg’s mainstage seasons, national and regional touring, international artist engagements and strategic initiatives, while contributing to new Australian commissions, expanded regional touring and major government funding outcomes.

Before moving into arts administration, Giles was a professional opera singer, performing principal roles with Opera Australia and appearing with leading Australian orchestras and opera companies. He later held senior management positions at Opera Australia and served as Senior Ministerial Liaison Officer for the NSW Minister for the Arts.

Giles said it was an honour to lead an organisation he had experienced both as a performer and an arts administrator.

“As we head towards our 40th anniversary in 2029, this is a significant moment for the organisation,” he said. “I’m committed to honouring everything the co-founders, Paul [Dyer] and Bruce [Applebaum], have built while helping guide the Brandenburg into its next chapter.”

The appointment comes as the orchestra prepares for its 40th anniversary in 2029 and continues to expand its artistic and regional activities.
