With more first-time faces than ever before, APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers has announced the nominees for the 2023 Screen Music Awards.

The Awards honour the excellence of Australian composition for the screen across 12 categories, with the winners to be announced at a ceremony on 9 November at Forum Melbourne.

This year, 23 composers have been nominated for the first time, while one Australian composer returns to possibly reap his 16th consecutive award.

Leading the pack with three nominations each are Bryony Marks and Michael Yezerski, who both appear in the Best Television Theme and Best Music for a Mini-series or Telemovie categories. Marks is nominated for her work on The Messenger – also nominated for Best Soundtrack Album – and Savage River. Yezerski receives his for Ivy + Bean, which also appears in Best Music for Children’s Programming, and Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities: Pickman’s Model.
