Darwin Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of Richard Mills AO as its next Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, marking a significant new chapter in the ensemble’s evolution.

Mills – one of Australia’s most accomplished composers and conductors – will officially begin his tenure with the orchestra in the 2026 season. His appointment follows an extensive selection process and brings to the Top End a leader with decades of experience across Australia’s orchestral and operatic sectors.

Best known for his Helpmann Award-winning operas Batavia and The Love of the Nightingale, as well as his re-orchestration of the ABC’s iconic news theme, Mills has led major arts institutions including Victorian Opera, West Australian Opera and the Adelaide Chamber Orchestra. He is also a long-time advocate for new Australian music and regional engagement.

Most recently Richard has conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra for an ABC recording as part of their 50 Fanfares project; Voyages for Darwin Symphony; the world premiere of his own opera Galileo, and La Cenerentola and Salome for Victorian Opera.
