Having just extended her tenure with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian conductor Simone Young has been awarded an honorary Doctor of Music by the University of Sydney, recognising her global impact as one of the world’s leading conductors.

Young received the honour at a ceremony on Friday evening at Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, presided over by Pro-Chancellor Emeritus Professor Alan Pettigrew and Conservatorium Dean Professor Anna Reid.

Vice-Chancellor and President Mark Scott praised Young’s achievements, saying they had transformed the global perception of Australian musicians.

“Simone Young’s career is a masterclass in artistic excellence and leadership,” Scott said. “She’s inspired generations of musicians through her vision, discipline and generosity, and continues to shape the future of classical music both here and internationally.”

Professor Reid said the doctorate was “richly deserved”, adding, “Simone Young is a force in global music. Her leadership, artistry and generosity have inspired countless students and professionals alike.”
