Stuart Skelton’s Janáček, David Robertson’s Adams and Opera Australia’s King Roger are all in the running for 2017.

Three recordings with Australian connections have been announced among the nominations for this year’s Grammy Awards.

A Chandos CD of Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass, featuring Australian Helden-tenor Stuart Skelton and conducted by Edward Gardner has been nominated in the Best Choral Performance category of the 2017 awards. The recording – released in February this year – received four stars from Limelight’s Tony Way, who wrote that a “major contribution is made by Australian Heldentenor Stuart Skelton who delivers the challenging tenor solos with unflinching confidence and surety.”

Australian audiences will also be pleased to learn that Sydney Symphony Orchestra Artistic Director and Chief Conductor David Robertson has received a nod. His recording of John Adams’ Violin Concerto Scheherazade.2, with Leila Josefowicz and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, has been nominated in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. The recording was given four and a half stars in the December issue of Limelight and it was Robertson who conducted the Australian premiere of the work with Josefowicz and the SSO in March this year.

For opera lovers, Kasper Holten’s Royal Opera House production of Szymanowski’s King Roger has been nominated for Best Opera Recording. A co-production with Opera Australia, King Roger will come to Sydney in January.
