Queen of alternative rock set to make classical debut on the Yellow Label.

Iconic American singer-songwriter and pianist Tori Amos has penned a classical-styled song cycle to be recorded by the world’s oldest and most revered classical label. The 47-year-old, platinum-selling artist fuelled a feminist movement in popular music during the 1990s and was one of the first alternative rockers to use piano as their main instrument rather than guitar. With her new album Night of Hunters, slated for September release, she makes her Deutsche Grammophon debut.

Amos describes Night of Hunters as a song cycle for the 21st century, drawing on classical forms – particularly theme and variations – to create a bold new collection of genre-defying music.

“I have used the structure of a classical song cycle to tell an ongoing, modern story”, Amos says of the project, which she wrote and produced. “The protagonist is a woman who finds herself in the dying embers of a relationship. In the course of one night she goes through an initiation of sorts that leads her to reinvent herself, allowing the listener to follow her on a journey to explore complex musical and emotional subject matter.”
