There are way more variations on Bach’s Goldberg Variations than there are Goldberg Variations. Especially if you include individual interpretations as variations – which, of course, they are by definition. Even widely differing interpretations exist by the same performer: Glenn Gould’s 1955 and 1981 accounts are perfect examples.
