What an ironically appropriate combination of names here with performers Parlando (in Italian, “speaking”) and their debut release, Censored Anthems. It’s a fairly new band, formed under the leadership of conductor Ian Niederhoffer only in 2019, and specialising in performing under-performed music.

It begins with a wonderfully rich and dark Adagio from Shostakovich’s 1934 opera Lady Macbeth of Mtensk, which hadn’t helped Shostakovich’s popularity with Stalin. Parlando and Niederhoffer give it some serious intensity, and Delos’s sound here is just right.

Mieczysław Weinberg’s Concertino Op. 42 for violin is a treasure. That being said, the liner notes point out that the piece reflects Weinberg’s circumstances (watched over by a personal KGB agent and persona non grata due to professional links to Shostakovich), and that the seemingly out-of-character conservatism of the writing was plausibly Weinberg attempting to toe the line. Aubree Oliverson as soloist is superb, and the whirling, obsessive third movement is spectacular.
