Founded by cellist Alexandra Békés (also of The Hartz Trio), this new string orchestra gives its inaugural performance at this event, with 11 local freelancing players led by violinist Hayato Simpson presenting some enterprising and imaginatively chosen repertoire.

Australian composer Carl Vine’s Smith’s Alchemy (Movement IV) is a string orchestra arrangement from his String Quartet No. 3 of 1994. It is delivered with amazing intensity and attack, accompanied by theatrical lighting, thus setting the bar for a fresh and innovative approach to performance by these talented players. The intimate acoustic of the venue is an asset, giving the eager audience a feeling of participation.

In a varied program that embraces both technical and musical challenge, Bartók’s Six Romanian Folk Dances are splendidly done – warmly flexible and authentic sounding – with admirable work from Simpson. Further contrast is offered by Jabra Latham’s wistful The Sweetest People.

However, the core work in this program is Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Op. 110a. This is a highly effective arrangement by Rudolf Barshai for string orchestra of the composer’s String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op. 110 of 1960.
