Tucked away in the north-eastern corner of London’s Trafalgar Square, St Martin-in-the-Fields is synonymous with an esteemed tradition in music.
It’s also the London home of the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra, which, on this occasion, performs with the elite instrumentalists of English Baroque Soloists conducted by the revered Bach exponent Masaaki Suzuki, founder of the illustrious Bach Collegium Japan, who makes his debut with the ensemble.
Leading the band is Madeleine Easton, founding Artistic Director and leader of the Bach Akademie Australia. Building on a glittering overseas career, Easton established the BAA in 2016, which is going from strength to strength. She maintains a busy performing and teaching schedule across the hemispheres.
This evening’s role is a testament to Easton’s expertise and the work that she has done in championing the music of J.S. Bach and bringing its historically informed performance to Australia. As Maestro Suzuki says:
“Music only really exists in the moment of performance, otherwise it dissolves, disappears. Our job and responsibility is to keep the music alive.”
