Under the banner of Dots+Loops, violist Katie Yap’s performance here was originally created as part of her 2023 Freedman Fellowship. The last of a four-concert set (collectively Multitudes, with each performance named after a Judith Wright poem), this concert paired Yap with her Van Diemen’s Band and Bronzewing collaborator Donald Nicolson on harpsichord and synth.
They began with Nicolson’s arrangement of Hildegard of Bingen’s Ave Generosa. The original, of course, is for voice, but here Yap and Nicolson performed it for viola with layers of synth providing a evocative layers of drone.
Next up was Telemann’s Sonata in E minor TWV 41:e5, originally for viola da gamba and continuo. Here, Nicolson switched over to harpsichord, but, though this was a lovely performance, I couldn’t quite see the link with the rest of the program. Arvo Pärt’s Fratres got an excellent reading for the same combination, with Nicolson’s dramatic harpsichord punctuation making for a perfect accompaniment to Yap’s pulsing arpeggios.
