It is a real challenge, creating the right environment for the artists involved, and it has led to some absolutely wonderful explorations into good music making akin to that encountered in a music festival. From a very young age musicians are encouraged to work with a changing array of colleagues in order to experience the unique challenges and excitement of ensemble playing. The magic of learning from others and their experiences is what great chamber music is all about. Each tour in the Selby & Friends annual series is a blank canvas on which to paint. Sometimes I think I will be able to follow a route successfully taken in the past, but somehow it never seems to work out that way. I begin by sourcing musicians with whom I would like to work and to find out their availability. It is often a difficult process knowing who is around. Sometimes it is pure serendipity to find a superb artist in town just when you were hoping they would be! I have a strong network of colleagues with whom I stay in touch and with whom I really like working and touring and they also stay in touch with me….
