Behind the doors of Sydney’s Great Synagogue, soaring arches and a star-studded ceiling are mood-lit for an evening of chamber music. Begin at the gin bar, take in the architecture, then settle in for The Boundless Heart.

Australian Chamber Orchestra violinist Satu Vänskä joins cellist Elina Faskhi and pianist Konstantin Shamray in music full of private passions. Haydn’s exuberant Gypsy Trio belongs to the set dedicated to Rebecca Schroeter, the London widow he fell for while married. Shostakovich began his First Piano Trio at sixteen, after meeting Tatyana Glivenko. Ravel’s Piano Trio adds shimmering colours and sweeping intensity.

With Vänskä playing her nearly 300-year-old Stradivari, three distinctive musical personalities meet in one of Sydney’s most remarkable interiors.
