Festival of Voices: Sea Shanty Session

7 July @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm AEST

The Tasmanian celebration of all things vocal returns with a host of performers from Australia and overseas. Traditional and contemporary works rub shoulders with cabaret and educational workshops, while headline acts include Hobart-based vocal ensemble JESSA performing contemporary classical repertoire at the Port Arthur Asylum, and vocal works setting words by Australian writers performed by AVÉ alongside polyphony by Bach and Victoria. This year’s Classical Choral Workshop concentrates on Handel, culminating in a concert featuring his Dixit Dominus, performed by the 120 singers of the Festival’s Classical Choral Workshop, and Zadok the Priest, performed by the Come Sing Handel Choir.

Limelight Editor’s Choice

Join Hobart Sea Shanty Sessions for a free, rollicking good time that is open to all.

The first couple of shanties will be led by experienced sea dogs, to get everyone into the swing of things.  After that, anyone can have a go at leading a shanty – the shanty master will wander around with a belaying pin and if you’d like to lead, just let them know.  If you’re given the pin, you’re next!

If you’re not keen on wearing the captain’s hat, come along and join in with your sleeves rolled up and ready to sing.  Shanties are for everyone, even if you believe you can’t carry a tune in a bucket!
