Chief Conductor Jaime Martín leads the MSO in Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune – composed in 1894 and inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé’s symbolist poem – and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, written in 1888 during a period of self-doubt and personal turmoil. The program also features the Australian premiere of Edmund Finnis’s Cello Concerto which, according to the composer, celebrates not only the instrument, but “singing, expression and life”. Co-commissioned by MSO, it is performed here by Sheku Kanneh-Mason.
