S’ Wonderful how 2022 has unfolded for Ashleigh Rubenach, given her love of Gershwin. She played American philanthropist Milo Davenport, who falls for Jerry Mulligan, in the musical of An American in Paris, directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. She subsequently performed a Gershwin cabaret show at Claire’s Kitchen in Sydney, and now stars as bootlegger Billie Bendix in the musical Nice Work If You Can Get It, which has its official opening at the Hayes Theatre Co on Wednesday, after earning standing ovations during previews.

“I’ve almost sung the whole songbook!” says Rubenach with a laugh.

“Of all the composers to spend a whole year with, Gershwin has to be right up there. I grew up watching all the old MGM classic films with my nana, while she looked after me when my mum was at work. I’ve listened to that music my whole life, so it’s such a joy to sing it now,” she tells Limelight.
