La Scala. The name instantly suggests opera. But the famous opera house in Milan is also home to one of the world’s oldest, most illustrious ballet companies. Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company was formed in 1778 but its history can be traced back to the Renaissance courts of Italy.
The company first toured in 1878 when it visited Paris. Since then it has travelled extensively, but never to Australia. But that will change next month when 115 members of the company, including 75 dancers, visit Brisbane as part of the QPAC International Series to give performances of two classic ballets, Giselle and Don Quixote. What’s more, the season has been planned so that audiences can see both on the final weekend.
