Congratulations on winning 3MBS’s The Talent this year. How do you feel about your win?
Thank you! I performed alongside some very talented musicians and I hear the judging panel got quite heated in their deliberation, so I feel extremely lucky! It was a huge honour to win and I’m humbled to receive all the opportunities that 3MBS is so graciously providing.
What repertoire did you play and why did you choose those pieces?
For the finals, I chose the final movement, Fuga, from Samuel Barber’s Piano Sonata Op. 26 and La Leggierezza, from Franz Liszt’s Three Concert Études S.144. The fugue I’ve loved for a long time – an unmistakably American language fuels a fugue intricately composed through an unrelenting modern lens. It’s difficult, but its rhythmic drive, harmonic complexity and expansive use of the piano make it extremely fun to play! I love the way Barber takes traditional forms and twists them in a completely modern way.
