ABC Classic has announced the theme for its 2023 Classic 100 Countdown: Your Favourite Instrument.

With voting opening online from 1 May, the Countdown also introduces a new weekly show to be hosted by musician and broadcaster Alice Keath. Spanning cultures and continents, Classic Instruments will showcase a different instrument every week and help keep voters informed.

“We’re so excited about this year’s theme as it’s something everyone can enjoy. Whether you’re a music lover, amateur or professional, everyone has a favourite,” said Acting ABC Classic and ABC Jazz Content Manager Kat McGuffie.

“We can’t wait to find out what instruments our listeners love hearing, and what will be Australia’s number one. We’re expecting lots of votes for the popular orchestral instruments, but we’re also looking forward to celebrating instruments across the musical spectrum, from the didgeridoo/yidaki to the synthesizer – or my personal favourite, the dulcitone. I’m sure there will be a few surprises in the mix as well.”
