The Biennale of Sydney has appointed internationally acclaimed Singaporean curator Low Kee Hong as Artistic Director of its 26th edition, to be held in 2028.

Currently Creative Director of Factory International in Manchester, Low will lead the artistic vision for the Biennale, which opens to the public on 11 March 2028 following a professional preview (Vernissage) from 8–10 March.

Low is expected to bring a multidisciplinary approach to the event, combining contemporary visual art with music, architecture, performance, literature, philosophy, food, fashion and nature. Maintaining contemporary art at its core, Low’s vision will expand the festival’s scope through collaborations across artistic disciplines.

At Factory International, Low oversees the curatorial program at Aviva Studios and directs the biennial Manchester International Festival. He recently curated Ai Weiwei: Button Up!, the Chinese artist’s largest site-specific exhibition to date, and collaborated with Ai Weiwei on the 24-hour performance Sewing a Button.

His previous roles include founding director and general manager of the Singapore Biennale, artistic director of the Singapore Arts Festival, associate artistic director of TheatreWorks Singapore, and Head of Theatre and Performing Arts at Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

Low said he hoped the 2028 Biennale would foster “wonder, connection and new possibilities” while creating “new ways of assembly and rebuilding communities” through contemporary art.

Biennale of Sydney CEO Barbara Moore described Low as a curator whose vision offers “warmth and kindness” at a time when audiences are seeking authentic connection.

NSW Arts Minister John Graham welcomed the appointment, saying Low had built an international reputation for creating “fun and joyous creative programs” that activate cities and bring communities together.
