Andris Nelsons concussed after “household accident” at Wagner Festival.
The Bayreuth Festival is notorious for its in-house family feuds but it seems a more prosaic run-in has laid low the new Chief Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Nelsons is in Bayreuth to conduct performances of Lohengrin – the infamous Hans Neuenfels production where the chorus are dressed as rats (see below) – when he was struck on the head by a door at his lodgings. The conductor was taken to hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery but meanwhile he has been advised not to travel. As a result, he will miss out on conducting the Verdi Requiem at Tanglewood this weekend.
Mark Volpe, the BSO Managing Director issued a statement to say: “Due to a household accident that has resulted in a severe concussion, Andris Nelsons will not be able to conduct the Verdi Requiem at Tanglewood on July 27. Over the weekend, Mr. Nelsons was struck in the head by a door that unexpectedly swung open at his residence in Bayreuth, Germany, where he has been conducting at the festival.
