Ruth Mackenzie has been appointed Britain’s new arts minister, taking up the role of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

Mackenzie, who has been nominated for a life peerage, assumed office on July 22 as part of Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s incoming government. She is currently Director of Arts at the British Council, a position she took up in June 2025, and has held senior roles across theatre, opera, festivals and cultural policy in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia.

Mackenzie was director of the London 2012 Festival, the official cultural program of the London Olympics, and has served as general director of the Manchester International Festival, director of Scottish Opera, executive director of Nottingham Playhouse and co-artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre.

In 2022, she was appointed artistic director of the Adelaide Festival and was to stay in the role until 2026. She quit in 2024 for a what would be a short-lived program director role in arts, culture and creative industries policy within South Australia’s Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

Mackenzie’s impact will be closely scrutinised. The UK arts sector is facing ongoing funding pressure, rising costs and concerns about international touring and cultural exchange post-Brexit and artists, venues and cultural organisations sare eeking clearer signals from the Burnham-led government on public support for the arts.
