The ASQ unveils its “new look” lineup… And it’s no longer an all-female affair.

The Australian String Quartet has revealed its two newest recruits following an international search that began in March and drew candidates from Germany, Switzerland and Canada. Violinist Kristian Winther and violist Stephen King, two of Australia’s most respected string players, will replace departing members Sophie Rowell and Sally Boud at the start of the 2012 season.

The announcement comes on the eve of a national farewell concert tour for Rowell and Boud, who leave the ASQ to pursue international solo engagements and for family commitments respectively. Their final performances with Anne Horton (violin) and Rachel Johnston (cello) in the current lineup will take place at the Huntington Estate Music Festival in November.

Canberra-born Winther was violinist with the Tinalley String Quartet, with whom he won the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and has performed as soloist with the Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian symphony orchestras. The 27-year-old ANAM graduate had been thinking of heading overseas to seek new opportunities but considers “joining the ASQ family…the greatest honour of my career.

“I’m looking forward to creating new musical chemistry alongside Stephen, Anne and Rachel and bringing great music...
