Season Preview: Your guide to the arts in 2023

Melbourne Theatre Company has revealed its inaugural season under Artistic Director and Co-CEO Anne-Louise Sarks. The impressive lineup features 12 productions, including five world premieres of new Australian work, as well as the Australian premieres of three international plays.

“The 2023 season offers new perspectives – through stories that we haven’t heard before and familiar stories told in new ways. We are boldly engaging in new conversations about theatre, and who we are, like never before,” says Sarks.

Chatting to Limelight over Zoom, Sarks says that it feels incredibly exciting to be launching her first MTC season. “It’s a bit like an opening night, all the anticipation. I’m relieved to finally be sharing it. I’ve been working on it for months and months and months!”

The season opens in January with Sunday by Anthony Weigh, a fantasy inspired by the stories that surround Sunday Reed, founder of the Heide Museum of Modern Art. Directed by Sarah Goodes, it...
