Season Preview: Your guide to the arts in 2024

Queensland Theatre has launched its 2024 season, one beginning with a new staging of a pre-war classic and ending with a new Australian musical.

Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 thriller Gaslight opens the season from 20 February. Directed by QT Artistic Director Lee Lewis, this fresh (2022) adaptation by writers Johnna Wright and Patty Jamieson blows the dust off a 19th century-set story you think you already know from the classic movie starring Ingrid Bergman – that of a woman in the grip of a man determined to make her doubt her own mind.

Speaking to the New York Times, Wright said: “We didn’t want to change the rules of Victorian society and how they affected women. Our question was: Is there a way for her to play by these rules and win?”

Expect a fresh twist on this timeless tale of toxic masculinity.
